Synopsis
What would it take to tame a wild cowboy?
One minute, Rhett Lockhart is a love ‘em and leave ‘em bull rider with a slow, sexy smile, a swagger, and not a care in the world. The next, he learns his free-wheeling days are over: a baby has been abandoned in the hospital, and there’s no question: he’s the father. But from the first moment he gazes into his daughter’s eyes, he knows the moment has come to say ‘no’ to no-strings. It’s time to grow up.
Standing in his way is the baby’s foster mother, Tara Alzate, who doesn’t quite believe Rhett is ready to change his ways. Still, she’s not not immune to his considerable charms. So when he proposes a marriage of convenience and shared custody, against her better judgement, she says “I do.” Can Tara tame this wild cowboy and make her own, long-buried dreams come true?
It turns out To Tame a Wild Cowboy is my first ever book by Lori Wilde! She's one of those authors whose books I see all the time while I'm browsing on Amazon/Goodreads, and there are a bunch of authors with the name Lori too and I think I was mixing her up with another author...
Anyway, I've been missing out because I had such a great time with To Tame a Wild Cowboy--love the countryside/small town setting, love the characters, love the Alzate and Lockhart family and I want to get to know the other members I met in this book. I really enjoyed Lori Wilde's writing style too--very readable and easy to get into so I was able to finish this book in a couple of sittings.
This book was my introduction to the series and I learned that the wealthy Lockhart family (made up of a number of sons) owns the largest ranch in their small town of Cupid, Texas. The Alzate family (made up of daughters) works for the Lockhart family and the children from both families grew up together. There's also a legend in the Alzate family where if the women hear a humming sound if they kiss someone it meant they found their soulmate. A couple of the Lockhart men and the Alzate women had already been paired up and I'm kind of interested in reading their books if I can find the time.
To Tame a Wild Cowboy is the seventh book in the Cupid, Texas series (but each book follows a different couple and each can be read as a standalone) and follows Rhett Lockhart and Tara Alzate. Rhett was living his best life as a bull rider this close to winning the world championship but, then he finds out that he fathered a preemie named Julie and her mother had abandoned her in the hospital. Tara, a registered nurse and the baby's foster mom for the last four months, desperately wants to officially adopt Julie. But, for Rhett, despite his initial freak out and feelings of inadequacy mostly because of his daddy issues, it was love at first sight with his baby daughter. He wants to do good by her, and isn't just going to hand his baby over to Tara.
The synopsis mentioned a marriage of convenience between Tara and Rhett, and that trope initially had me interested in picking up To Tame a Wild Cowboy, but that plot point actually came much later in the novel. Instead, we learn that Rhett and Tara grew up together on the Lockhart ranch--she's four years older than Rhett and used to babysit him. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Rhett and Tara because their personalities and outlook on life were so different. But, they just fit despite them being complete opposites. I really enjoyed the animosity between them in the first half of the book, and then they had to work together in the second half--the mix of opposites-attract/hate-to-love/marriage-of-convenience tropes were really fun.
I found To Tame a Wild Cowboy really entertaining and I read it really quickly! I wished I had been able to pick it up sooner, but I'm glad I found a chunk to time to dedicate to the book so I can read it continuously. It checked all the boxes in terms of my favorite tropes. Rhett and Tara were fantastic on their own and together, and I rooted for them to find their happily ever after. The last few chapters really hit me in the feels--my heart broke for them in that one scene and then swooned during that airport scene. If you got a hankering for a sweet cowboy romance or want a quick beach read, I recommend checking out To Tame a Wild Cowboy.
