Merrily Ever After by Jenny Holiday + The Bastard's Bargain by Katee Robert | Mini Reviews

Hello everyone,
December is always one of my worst reading months of the year. And it's especially busy this year because Leslie (my younger sister and sometimes blog partner on this here blog) is graduating college this month! So, I'm playing catch up with a couple of mini reviews today...

Release Date: December 4, 2018 >> Out now!

Series: Bridesmaids Behaving Badly #2.5

Synopsis
Elise Maxwell is loving her first Christmas with her husband, Jay Smith. So far, newlywed life has been filled with laughter and lots of steamy marital "bliss." But when Elise discovers she's accidentally, against-all-odds pregnant, happily-ever-after screeches to a halt. Although she sees it as a Christmas miracle, Elise knows her new husband might not agree...

Jay never wanted to be a father. In fact, he's avoided it his entire life, worried he'd repeat the patterns of his own messed-up childhood. He's madly in love with Elise and, until now, he thought they were on the same page about not having children. But her surprise pregnancy changes everything. Elise is suddenly committed to parenthood, and Jay knows he can't lose her. Facing his deepest fears will be difficult, but with a little holiday magic, Jay might be able to prove to Elise that - as a family - they're destined to live merrily ever after.

The Bridesmaids Behaving Badly series is one of my favorites this year and found a new favorite author in Jenny Holiday. I've been so excited to read another novella featuring Elise and Jay after reading about their wedding in the series prequel novella, Once Upon a Bride (my review), back in the summer.

In the aptly titled Merrily Ever After as it's set around the holidays, Elise and Jay have been married for a couple of years now and everything is wonderful... until Elise found out she's pregnant. This is a huge problem for their marriage. Although Elise wanted kids, she had accepted the fact that she'll never have them because of her endometriosis, which made her Jay's dream woman because he never wanted to have any kids (daddy issues). Elise's pregnancy and Jay's reaction to this life changing news this could make or break their marriage.

I love romances that feature an already married pair and Merrily Ever After did not disappoint! Elise and Jay are my favorite couple in the series--I love the pairing of the vivacious interior designer and the reserved accountant who is actually a sexy beast in the bedroom, their mutual love of board games, and the grand gestures for his woman from said reserved accountant. And, yep, we got all that here!

One of my favorite things about the series is the female friendship between Elise, Gia, Jane, and Wendy. They have such distinct personalities and I loved seeing all of them again and getting an update on what they've been up to. Merrily Ever After also acts as a nice refresher before we read Gia's book, which will be out next month.

If you're new to the series, I think Merrily Ever After can be read as a standalone (or read Once Upon a Bride first about Elise and Jay's wedding, which is currently free on Kindle) if you just want a quick holiday read. But, if you're a fan of the series, Merrily Ever After is a must-read! Great characters, female friendships and found families, all the swoons--what's not to love?

Synopsis
Married to the enemy

When Keira O'Malley was a child, she used to picture her perfect wedding. The flowers. The dress. Her husband. But nothing could have prepared her for saying "I do" to Dmitri Romanov-cold, domineering, and always one step ahead of everyone else in the ever-shifting power plays of New York City. She agreed to his bargain to secure peace for her family, and she may want the bastard more than she'd ever admit, but she'll be damned if she'll make this marriage easy for him.

Dmitri knows better than to underestimate Keira for one second. Molten desire smolders between them, a dangerous addiction neither can resist. But his enemies are already on the move, and he needs every ounce of his legendary focus and control to keep them alive. Keira could just be his secret weapon-if she doesn't bring him to his knees first.

To be honest, my expectations going in to The Bastard's Bargain was pretty low. I only had previously read only one other book by Katee Robert, which I was so hyped for, but ended up being very disappointed by (read my review of The Last King).

BUT, The Bastard's Bargain was a complete turn around! It was SOOO GOOD!! It had all the tropes I love--arranged marriage, opposites attract, hate to love, warring families--plus all the hot sex that perfectly complements the hero and heroine talking and getting to know each other outside of the bedroom.

I haven't read any of the other books in The O'Malley series and I kind of wish I did because not only were there seemed to be some build up between Dmitri Romanov and Keira O'Malley in some of those books that led to this book, but also with the villains who are trying to take down the O'Malleys and the Romanov. But, I was able to thoroughly enjoy The Bastard's Bargain without reading any of the other books--though I may go back and read them later on if only to read how Dmitri clashed with the O'Malleys previously.

I love dark mob-centered romances but I don't nearly read enough of them. I ate up feisty yet broken Keira O'Malley and head of the Romanov clan and gentleman murderer Dmitri Romanov. The two of them were so perfectly imperfect--Keira is pure fire while Dmitri was cold Russian ice and it was great watching them clash and then find their best self with each other. I SWOONED so hard, especially when Dmitri called Keira moya koroleva and spoke his feelings for her in Russian.

Fast-paced, dark, sexy, and so freaking entertaining! The Bastard's Bargain is fantastic! Read it!!

Happy reading,
Michelle
