Synopsis
If you’re planning on falling in love…
When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.
you’d better be sure…
Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.
… someone is there to catch you.
Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.
Playing for Keeps is about down-on-her-luck tattoo artist Sadie Lane, and super-rich businessman Caleb Parker--two people who are the complete opposite of each other and seemingly have nothing in common. Until one rainy night when they rescued a three-legged dog they named Lollipop. Co-parenting a dog meant seeing, talking, and hanging out with each other more, and for Sadie and Caleb opening up to each other in unexpected ways. But, they both have issues to work through--Sadie, more than anything, wants to prove that she can stand on her own two feet and take care of herself, and Caleb, who spent his formative years sickly and weak, is now one of the most riches men in the world and want to return the favor and take care of everyone he cares for.
I was expecting a light-hearted rom-com with a little fun mystery thrown in like Hot Winter Nights, but while Playing for Keeps still have some rom-com-y elements it's a bit more serious in tone as Caleb and especially Sadie have some baggage they have to work through. But, the most adorable dog Lollipop was there to provide some funny moments and to cut the tension at times. Even though I'm more of a cat person, I am really enjoying having dogs on the page--their silly antics keep me smiling as I read.
It did take me a while to warm up to Sadie because she's very stubborn, insists on doing everything for herself and pushed people away who offered to help. There were times when I wondered why Caleb was so attracted to her in the first place because she was so prickly. As for Caleb, he was a sweetheart right from the beginning and I love how he just naturally became a doting dog dad to Lollipop. He's my favorite in the novel--right after Lollipop, of course! I did cheer when Caleb, Sadie, and Lollipop did finally get their well-deserved HEA.
I only read one other book in the Heartbreaker Bay series (check out my review of Hot Winter Nights here), but you don't have to read the other books to enjoy Playing For Keeps--though if you did read the other books, you'll get a kick seeing the other characters in the other books. Playing for Keeps is a sweet opposites-attract romance, though not as light-hearted as some of Jill Shalvis's other books. Still, if you're a fan of Jill Shalvis, Playing for Keeps is definitely not one to be missed!

“Sadie.”
She shook her head.
“Look at me. Please?”
It was the damn please that had her opening her eyes. He’d closed the gap so that if she so much as took a breath, they’d be touching.
So she did just that. She took a deep breath, and then their bodies were up against each other, his warm and hard. Everywhere. “What’s happening?” she whispered.
“I believe you’re deciding between kicking me in the nuts and kissing me.” One side of his mouth curved very slightly as he lifted their still joined hands above her head, against the wall.
“But that last part might just be in my dreams.”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Yes, it’s just in my dreams?”
She meant to say yes again, she really did.
She even opened her mouth to say it, because this was insane, this incredible . . . craving she had for him. It made no sense. Less than no sense, and yet . . .
She went up on tiptoe and touched her mouth to his.
