Synopsis
Skye Copeland is on paid leave from her broadcasting job after accidentally drawing a pecker on the traffic map.
Let that sink in. Like it’s her fault the traffic pattern created a perfect schlong?
Skye isn’t laughing. She needs this job. And that’s the only reason she’s willing to chase down a story in her least favorite place—that hell on earth known as Vermont.
A quick trip. In and out. Much like - never mind. She can sneak into the town that once tried to break her, get the story and slide back into the good graces of her producer. Easy peasy.
But things go sideways the moment she steps over the county line. Her stepsister is running from a violent drug dealer. And the cop on the case is none other than Benito Rossi, the man who broke Skye’s teenage heart.
His dark brown eyes still tear her apart. And even as she steels herself to finally tell him off after twelve years, the old fireworks are still there.
Things are about to go boom.
I think Benito Rossi might be my all-time favorite Sarina Bowen hero. I mean, I say that with every new book I read by Sarina, but Benito was just the freaking SWEETEST!! The best brother, the best friend, the best lover... Benito is EVERYTHING!!
Fireworks is the sixth book (but it can be read as a standalone) in Sarina Bowen's True North series--books set in a small picturesque Vermont town of Colebury--and this time we follow Benito Rossi, brother to previous characters in the series, and Skye Copeland, who moved to town when she was sixteen and abruptly left about a year later. As soon as 18-year-old Benito met Skye, it was love at first sight. But, Skye was dealing with a horrible ex-stepfather (trigger warning for sexual and verbal abuse) at home and a negligent mother and Benny knew that what Skye needed then was a friend. As for Skye, Benito was the one person she could trust and she relied on his friendship to escape her horrible home life while secretly falling for him. Things come to a head on the night of prom, with Skye leaving without saying goodbye and cutting off all communication with Benito.
Fast-forward twelve years later to the present, and Skye was on her way to her least favorite place, Colebury, Vermont. But, it's better than New York City, where she works as a journalist, after a humiliating experience where she accidentally drew a giant penis while doing traffic at her local news station. Her stepsister Rayanne had invited Skye promising a juicy story that may further her career. But, Rayanne's involvement with drug dealers puts Skye right in front of the cop leading the investigation: Benito Rossi. Now Skye and Benito have a second chance. Will they take it? Or, is it too late?
Like I said at the beginning of my review, I fell for Benito hard in this book. But, Skye is pretty amazing too. I get her and why she is the way she is--to be honest, I see myself a bit in her. Both Benito and Skye were great on their own and perfect together. Sarina Bowen always creates the swooniest couples, but they're also so human and perfectly imperfect that they're so real and she tackles topics in a way you don't usually see in a typical romance--it's no different here in Fireworks.
I was kind of apprehensive of the tag line about love at first sight because I immediately thought "insta-love." But, absolutely ZERO insta-love here! Benito might've fallen for Skye at first sight, but they became really great friends first and when they reconnected as adults things happened in mere days, but because of their history together it felt very natural.
Reading Sarina Bowen's books are always a treat and Fireworks had everything I love in a romance--a hero to swoon over, a heroine you want to be best friends with, a fantastic couple to root for, a bit of mystery and police work, secondary characters from previous books and getting a little update on them (an added bonus to Fireworks is you get to see some of the Rossis and Shipleys in high school!).
If you haven't picked up a book by Sarina Bowen, what are you waiting for? The True North series is the perfect place to start. If you're a long time fan, Fireworks is a must-read! If you like contemporary romance with more meat to them, I highly recommend Fireworks.
